Fashion in North Korea and how small details will make you see things differently

Between bombs and nukes let's dare see things from another angle.
Even thought this is hard to imagine, it’s interesting to see how individuality is creeping in even in the most isolated country of all. Maybe people are not allowed to experience anything else outside what’s imposed by the regime but if you browse some photos you can see that the freedom spirit it’s not extinct.

It’s true that the navy, black and grey are the predominant colors but accents of pink and yellow are becoming more popular. If you think about it, the leader’s wife Ri Sol-ju is seen as something like a style icon. She is well known for her fit two-pieces outfits in bright colors. Therefore it’s only natural for the young women in North Korea to aspire to her look.

Leaving aside the military parades and factory uniforms, it’s common for women under the current dictatorship to wear kitten heels. This is even a requirement i might add for singers, waitresses or any other job that involves public visibility.

Pins that feature Kim Il Sung, his son or both are worn with pride by all adults. It doesn’t matter which one you choose as long as it’s placed above the heart.

The young generation seems to embrace this slightly different trend and enjoy life in North Korea. Obviously this can be seen mostly in Pyongyang because of its exposure to foreigners in recent years.

As we can see in the photo below, even though children wear uniforms there is no doubt they try to impose their own style.

It’s hard to judge from the outside and maybe we have some things wrong. But it’s always nice to observe other cultures and especially one as North Korea. Hopefully this positive feeling won’t go away and with time we’ll be able to see each other as friends rather than enemies.
